Where Do You Train?: Old Field Preserve

imageOld Field Preserve is a 100 acre preserve added to the local greenways in 2003 and was known as the Houlihan property.  It is bordered by Route 35 and Mead Street in South Salem, NY about 2 miles from the Ridgefield, CT border.  It has 2.5 miles of mostly flat trails mixing fields and woods.  The easternmost portion of the blue trail borders the South Salem Wolf Center and hikers and runners are sometimes surprised to see a wolf or two staring back at them behind the 12 foot high fence.  Also near the end of the blue trail is an FAA beacon tower.

This trail system can be combined with the Town Park trail system and even the Pound Ridge Reservation trail system to construct a run of 2, 3, 4 or more trail miles with minimal pavement (crossing Route 35 and the Town Park access road).  The elevation change from the lowest point to the highest point is around 300 feet.

The Lewisboro Land Trust has published a guide called “Walking Wild Lewisboro” which has details and trail maps for this preserve and many other trails in Lewisboro.
